The European Cyclists’ Federation’s Velo-city conference series is widely considered the premier international planning conference on cycling. The conferences are designed to encourage cycling as part of daily transport and recreation.
Velo-city began in 1980 in Bremen, Germany with deep ties in the founding of the European Cyclists’ Federation. Since then conferences have been held in cities including Copenhagen, Brussels, Barcelona and Montreal.
The ECF established the Velo-city Global conference series in 2010 to answer the growing demand for expertise in cycling from cities. Velo-city Global aims to achieve contributions and participants from six continents. The program and structure of the conference are also developed using a global context. This is different from the Velo-city conference series. Velo-city is developed with an international perspective but has a main focus on Europe or the country hosting the conference in that particular year.
Velo-city conferences bring together those involved in policy, promotion and the provision of cycling facilities and programs. Engineers, planners, architects, social marketers, academic researchers, environmentalists, business, and industry representatives join forces with government at all levels ranging from municipal politicians, policy makers and educators in knowledge sharing in order to build effective trans-national partnerships to deliver benefits worldwide.
Objectives of the Velo-city series are:
Every second year the Velo-city conference is known as Velo-city Global. In 2014 it will be held in Adelaide, South Australia.
