Description: Australian Rules Football is the true indigenous game of Australia which many believe had its origin in traditional Aboriginal recreational games prior to European settlement. It’s a thrilling blend of running, kicking, tackling, marking and passing by hand. A truly 360 degree game, it combines the foot skill of soccer with the courage and physical strength of rugby. Players skilfully handle the oval-shaped ball, effortlessly kicking it 50m. They jump metres in the air, run half-marathons through the entirety of a game and then find energy to sprint down one of the largest fields of any ball sport in the world. The modern game demands professional athletes with the physiques to match. Played over four x 30 minute quarters, the game provides two hours of exhilaration and excitement.
It’s a game that ignites passions in fans like no other in Australia. At the highest level it’s played by men but women are some of its most passionate supporters. It’s a game that appeals to all cultures. Indigenous people make up 2.5% of the Australian population, but are 9% of the players in the national league.
South Australia’s clubs, the Port Adelaide Power and the Adelaide Crows, play on one of the world’s finest cricket grounds recently redeveloped for Aussie Rules and to assist revitalising Adelaide’s city centre. With all Australian mainland states represented in the national competition, the game is constantly expanding and aspiring to be considered Australia’s national game. There’s nothing like being there!
